Basketmakers' Association 50th Anniversary - Big Weave Basket number 44

The basket was woven by members of the Weardale Group. The information below is from Sheila Walton.

‘When I was asked by Anne Otley if I would be willing to make one of the frames for the BA’s Big Weave, I looked at the photographs of the frames that were appearing on Instagram and read about regional baskets from other areas being contributed.

Because Northumbria Basketry Group members were to be involved in weaving several Big Weave baskets, I felt it was important that one of these should be our own regional traditional frame basket, which has an intriguing and unusual construction and merits being more widely known.

Once I had made the frame, which incorporates a wooden yoke made by my husband, David, the creel was woven by Susan Barker, Liz Beech, Elaine Blackett-Ord, Jane Chapman, Jo Foster, Carol Oulton, Liz Reed, and myself. We are all members of Weardale Basketry Group, which is a local group within Northumbria Basketry Group.’
