Join Karla Pearce to create your own beautiful hen basket, also known as an Ose, over two days.
This ancient frame basket was developed by Scottish basketmakers to carry a broody hen from one croft to another, hence its name the ‘hen basket’. It’s also sometimes called an ‘Ose ’, which is derived from ‘osier ’, which means willow. There is some evidence to suggest that the original design may date back to medieval times.
Suitable for beginners with guidance, improvers will also love this basket, especially if they are interested in improving their frame basket skills.
Learn about the history of the hen basket and the skills you need to create one, using pre-made willow hoops and frame basketry techniques.
You will learn:
-how to join your hoops
-how to lash the pre-made willow hoops together
-how to weave in between them
-how to insert ribs to shape your basket
-how to compensate in your weaving
Karla will also demonstrate hoop making for anyone who would like to learn.
