I started weaving with willow over 20years ago as part of my job with a wildlife charity where we invited weavers to celebrate at events, making willow animal sculptures for reserves and living willow structures for their gardens and I got hooked. With a strong interest in learning how to recreate traditional baskets of Lancashire I was lucky to receive funding from HCA/Nadfas to learn basketmaking with Adrian Charlton and set up my business Pip Cottage in 2016 teaching and making basketry. I have had an obsession with recreating the Southport Boat basket and have had help with the research and training from many people, including Owen Jones who makes the wood handles and splints. A small plot of land adjacent to my house is planted with a variety of willows including varieties, sourced from Rothamstead, that were once grown in adundance in West Lancashire, renown for their fine willow and baskets. These are now productive and are incorporated into my baskets and sculptures.
