I’m a relative newbie to willow work starting in 2013 with sculptural forms then moving onto traditional basketry.  Now I’m addicted to the lovely smell of willow, the way the rods bend and curve, finding out how it behaves and what will and won’t work, learning from basketry tutor Phil Bradley who teaches in our venue several times a year. I’ve also started growing willow here, back in 2016 and another small bed at the start of lockdown, following a willow cultivation workshop at Harlow Carr with Phil where we were able to collect a whole variety of cuttings to take home and plant! The willow bed here does have an amazing view, but at over 1000’ in the Yorkshire Dales and quite windy, is a bit of a challenge!

In Feb 2019 I attended Ann Turnbull’s lunch bag workshop up in Northumbria after joining the Group and found out about the smaller groups across the county. Anna will be here in September to teach this lovely workshop to our local weavers.

I am keen to find out more about how the Northumbria Group runs their self-help groups since most are quite far from here. From the more local folk who come to Broadrake workshops, we started an ad-hoc self-help group once a month, but all that has gone awry with Covid. We hope to start again soon, planning small projects to challenge what we already know a little more. If you might be interested in either formal workshops or coming along to simply weave together, sharing tips and knowledge along with chat, then please check out the workshops link on our website and get in touch.
